Time Has a Way

AGING. It’s a fact.

We can resist it. Deny it. Ignore it. But it goes on and happens anyway, doesn’t it!

One of the things I’ve worked on with multiple clients is how to dress now that they are 50, 60 or beyond. As our bodies change we might find ourselves wanting something different from our clothing, while still looking our best. That’s right fashion designers and marketers...women don’t fall off the face of the planet when they turn 50!

I was thinking about all this today as I was reading a book on the Japanese embroidery technique called Sashiko. The author referenced the concept of wabi-sabi. Have you heard of it?

Wabi-sabi is the beautiful idea of embracing imperfection; the natural process of aging and inevitable decay. It is the belief that along with aging comes wisdom, character, depth, and yes, beauty. Beauty that has been earned. EARNED goddamnit!

These jeans, which I have mended many times using sashiko, are a good example of imperfection, patina, and decay. But they keep getting better. The color changes slightly. They get more broken in. I like them more.

Instead of trying to hide the evidence of our decay, we can learn to embrace it knowing that we too, get better with age. You’ve earned that beauty, damnit! .

If you have grown into the over-50 demographic and found yourself wondering what the heck to wear now, you are not alone! Book a free call with me to talk about how Style Coaching could work for you.
